Avengers Vol. 1 #50, published in March 1968, is a landmark Silver Age key issue marking the first full appearance of Karl Lykos, the man who would soon become the X-Men villain Sauron. Though not yet transformed into his pterodactyl form, Lykos plays a major role in this issue, establishing the foundation for one of Marvelโs classic mutants-gone-wrong.
This issue also concludes a multi-part storyline involving the cosmic entity Typhon, as Hercules, banished from Olympus, returns to battle the villain with the help of the Avengers. The lineup includes Captain America, Goliath, Hawkeye, Wasp, Quicksilver, and Scarlet Witch in a mythic battle that bridges sci-fi, mythology, and future mutant lore.
Written by Roy Thomas and penciled by John Buscema, this issue is a crossover key for Avengers and X-Men collectors alike.
